As with any job you learn from experience. And I can finally say I am learning a few things as a pet sitter ; )
What I’ve learned in the last week is that cats are an extension of me. I am comfortable with the title crazy cat lady- I actually take that as a compliment! Currently I’m watching two Main Coons named Willow and Jasmine and they are really sweet and friendly and easy going (typical of the breed). But what I’ve learned from them is to relax and enjoy my time on earth. I’ve always been interested in behavior and how it changes and adjusts to the weather and outside stimuli and such, but this week I made a more conscious effort to really evaluate all of my clients and Willow and Jas became my favorite subjects.
Cats are creatures of habit and are turned off by change and new things- this becomes intesting when a stranger (like a pet sitter) comes into their home when the people they are familiar with are suddening gone. How do they adapt? Well, since my job entails keeping their rouine as normal as possible most cats adapt pretty well. Some cats are shy at first but soon realize that I’m not a threat but a good thing to have around since I am the giver of food and snuggles. Some cats (Willow and Jasmine) are happy to have anyone come and give them their daily love. Kinda like the song “If you’re not with the one you love, then love the one your with”.
So, my point is… Take your day as it comes. Enjoy what life gives you and don’t stress about things that are outside of your control. If you get a good belly rub and some treats then it’s been a good day!
